The original facade of the building (completed in 2010) developed structural issues that required a complete replacement. A new solar facade from SolarLab was designed in close collaboration with the building’s original architects, Schmidt/Hammer/Lassen (part of Perkins & Will). The solution maintains the original architectural vision while replacing a failing cladding with a resilient and durable new facade. Through close collaboration, SolarLab developed a unique façade solution with visible fittings, designed to retain the architectural heritage in the new façade material. Eliminating traditional framing ensured invisible integration of the high efficiency photovoltaic technology, and a uniform facade expression where active and passive areas are indistinguishable. The solution required a custom mounting system in addition to over 60 different panel designs to cover the building completely with a mix of active and passive panels. The result was engineered, produced and installed by SolarLab.
